The Assemblyof Schwartzistan

The Clerk of the Assembly certifies the return of the general election held on 2 October 1849, the tenth held under the standing order, in which three parties contested sixty-three seats across seven regions of nine. The Assembly Union returns with the largest number of members, twenty-three, against twenty-two for The Reed Party and eighteen for The Continuity Party. Mean turnout across the seven regions stood at 71.9 per cent, the poll running from first light to the closing of the booths at the courthouses and market halls named in the writs. Every region returns members of all three parties; no region divides its nine seats among fewer than three interests. The Union's return rests on its strength in the west and north — Westgau, Norrfeld and the Capital District — while the Reed Party's twenty-two seats owe most to its majorities in the Ostrand and the Sudmark, and the Continuity Party takes its plurality only in Kesselhöh and the Osmoor, where no party clears two-fifths of the poll.
